Located between Ronda and the Mediterranean sea, the Genal valley is one of the greatest examples of the beauty of the Andalusian outdoors.
Spotted with tiny whitewashed villages, this sleepy forest has gorgeous rivers of crystal clear waters running through it. This abundance of natural resources and the gentle Mediterranean climate shaped a basic and charming industry that started in Moorish times. Small vineyards and wineries, river mills and citrus plantations featuring a clever system of irrigation ditches populated the hillsides and river banks of this lost magical valley. Nowadays, there’s only past evidence of this primary industry hiding in the beautiful wilderness of the forest.
This three day walking tour will allow us to enjoy the natural wonders of the area while learning how its past settlers lived and which basic industries and infrastructures they had.
On the first day we will check into our hotel and then we will explore our quaint little base-village and its surroundings.
Perched on a hillside and with a population of around 500 people, our base of choice for this tour features a surprising collection of contemporary art pieces in its steep and quirky streets and in the local museum.
Every two summers, the village welcomes artists from all over the world to be inspired by its genuine charm and breath taking nature.
Then every artist donates a piece to the village that is nowadays a real outdoors museum. After this initial exploration we will have a welcome dinner in a small local restaurant to gather energies for next day’s walking.
The second day, we will have a hearty Andalusian breakfast in our hotel and then we will start our 10,5Km (7mi) hillwalking journey. Along the way we will find several old ruins that will reveal very interesting facts about their past dwellers and their lifestyles. We will have fabulous opportunities for swimming in heavenly spots. It will be in one of these places of paradise where we will have a gourmet picnic for lunch.
On the last stage of our route we will join a mountain trail maintained by the locals that has a curious and ancient system of gutters. After coming back to our base village, we will have a great dinner in a fantastic family run restaurant to recupearte energies and plan the next day.
The third day, we will cover a distance of 7,5Km (4mi). We will start descending through a forest of cork oaks until reaching a gorgeous meadow with a river where we will have our gourmet picnic lunch as well as a great chance for taking a dip. From here we will ascend towards an abandoned moorish settlement. Looking at the ancient trees and constructions we will get to understand the organization and main activity of the village. We will later start our return to our base village where we will spend the last night of our tour having a farewell dinner.
