Description and schedule of services

4th of September: private culture and gastronomy tour of Málaga old town

11:30am: be met by your personal local host outside the gates at the port of Málaga to start your discovery journey of the city. Málaga is very compact, so you will be able to explore its many wonders on foot (you may want to take a taxi from the port to the old town but you can decide on that spontaneously with your host).

You will start your private walking tour by learning first about the origins and evolution of the city. This first part of the tour will take you to see the oldest (and most impressive) landmarks: the Roman theatre and the Moorish fortress: the so-called Alcazaba. This will allow you to travel back in time in order to understand the important settlement that the city was both in the Roman and in the Hispanic-Muslim periods as well as its evolution until the present times. The Alcazaba is a fantastic sample of Hispanic-Muslim architecture that also offers beautiful views of the city due to its location on top of a hill.

After learning about the Roman and Hispanic-Muslim past of Málaga, you will be taken to visit its majestic Cathedral. There you will enjoy taking a seat for a little while to enjoy the explanations of your host about the construction and history of this temple. Also, you will be surprised to hear about the connection between this cathedral and the US independence.

2pm: your introduction to the history and architecture of Málaga will surely make you feel like gaining an understanding of the present culture and personality of the city and you will enjoy this during a tapas and wines journey of its old town. You will experience this genuinely Spanish approach to enjoying a meal by visiting a selected tapas bar, where you will taste a selection of local dishes and wines.

3:15pm: after lunch, you will be taken on a private relaxed tour of the Picasso Museum of Málaga. There you will learn about the life and work of the most iconic local artist through some of the most representative paintings that the museum collection has.

4:30pm: after your visit to the Picasso museum you will be taken by taxi to the Castle of Gibralfaro, which offers excellent panoramic views of the city of Málaga. This will make the icing on the cake for your discovery journey of Málaga city.

5:15pm: after your visit to the Castle of Gibralfaro and maybe a coffee there (there’s a hotel up in the castle). Take another taxi back to the port of Málaga.

5:30pm: arrival to the port of Málaga and end of the tour.

5th of September: private culture and gastronomy tour of Cadiz old town

9am: meet your personal local host outside the port Gates of Cadiz port and get on a taxi to start a panoramic tour of the perimeter of the city aimed at learning about its peculiar geography and about its colonial defensive system. Your panoramic tour will finish at the beach of la Caleta from where you will be able to see the views of the two castles that defend it: the castle of San Sebastian and the castle of Santa Catalina. From there, you will walk through Parque Genovés and Alameda Apodaca Park enjoying fabulous panoramic views of the iconic bay of Cádiz.

10am: after your panoramic introduction and initial walk, start a private walking tour of the old town with a special focus on the foundation of the city by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago and on the period when it held the monopoly of all trade with America, formerly established in Seville.

You will start this tour seeing incredibly well preserved evidence of the Phoenician past of the city in the Archaeology museum. This will allow you to understand who the Phoenicians were, where they came from, why they based themselves in Cadiz 3000 years ago and the impact that their arrival had in the present history, culture, gastronomy and wines of Southern Spain.

Later, you will travel forward in time to the 18th century, when the city held the monopoly of all trade with the Americas, formerly established in Seville. The bourgeoisie that settled down in Cádiz in this period transformed the city completely into a refined and cosmopolitan colonial hub. These new inhabitants of the city brought to Cádiz not only gold, silver, mahogany and other precious materials but also new ideas that transformed the mentality of the city and later of the whole of Spain.

Along this second part of the tour you will visit some selected buildings that will reveal the wealth, refinement and change of mentality that the city enjoyed in this colonial period. This will be the oratory of the Holy Cave (inside and outside), the Church of San Antonio (outside), the Church of San Francisco (outside) and several colonial mansions (outside).

12pm: end of your introductory walking tour in the local market of Cádiz with tastings of selected local produce in hand-picked stalls. This will allow you to enjoy the vibrancy of the local market and to understand the essential proximity service it represents for the local community as well as the important role it plays in the social fabric of the city.

12:30pm: end of your tour of the market and and short walk to a selected local tavern to learn about the famous fortified wines that traveled from Cádiz to América. Tasting of selected local fortified wines there.

1pm: small walk from the tavern to a selected tapas bar for a tapas and wines lunch there including a selection of 6 – 9 dishes to share and up to 3 wines per person.

2:30pm: end of lunch and walk back to the port of Cadiz through the square where the Cathedral is.

3pm: arrival to the port of Cadiz and end of services for the day.
