Description and schedule of services

21st of September: private walking tour of Cartagena city

11am: meet your personal local host at the port of Cartagena to start your discovery journey of this very compact city that you will be able to fully explore on foot.

You will start your walking tour by visiting the archaeological wonders of the city. These are its Carthaginian city walls, Roman Theater and Roman Forum. This will allow you to learn about the foundation of the city in the 1st century BC and about its flourishing Carthaginian, Roman and Byzantine periods. During this part of the tour you will also learn how archaeological finds of the size of a Roman Theater have remained unknown until very recently and how their discovery can contribute to the regeneration of rather forgotten quarters of Spanish cities until making them important parts of the urban landscape.

1:30pm: after this historical introduction to the city, you will enjoy a visit to the local food market. This is where people from Cartagena buy their fresh products: fish, olives, Spanish ham and many other local delicacies. While you explore the market, you may want to enjoy some tastings in selected stalls in order to enjoy some interaction with the local community, assisted by your host.

2pm: after your tour of the market your local host will give you free time for lunch at leisure pointing you in the right direction for you to make the most of your lunch time.

3:25pm: after your free time for lunch, reconnect with your guide to top up your gastronomy experience in Cartagena with a special coffee: the local asiático. This is a coffee with liquor 43, cinnamon, condensed milk and some other secret ingredients.

3:45pm: your tour will continue with an exploration of Cartagena’s 18th century military architecture and late 19th century modernist palaces, which concentrate on a beautiful pedestrian part of town, delightful to walk around and to take in the local atmosphere.

5pm: after your tour of these sections of the city enjoy a relaxed walk back to the port, escorted by your guide.

5:15pm: arrival to the port and end of services for the day.

20th of September: shore excursion from Cadiz to Jerez

8am: meet your personal local host at the port of Cadiz and get in a modern and comfortable Mercedes minivan with a dedicated driver to start a panoramic tour of the perimeter of the city in order to understand its particular geography and to see its unique defensive architecture.

8:30am: after this introduction, you will be taken to the heart of the old town for a walking tour focused on the foundation of the city by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago and on the period when it held the monopoly of all trade with America. You will learn who the Phoenicians were, what brought them to Cadiz, what they brought to Cadiz and the impact that their arrival had in the development of Southern Spanish history and culture. You will also learn about the bourgeois and cosmopolitan city that Cadiz became in the 18th century when merchants from all over the world settled down in the city, making its economy, liberal ideas and openness to the world boom.

10am: after your tour of Cadiz, reconnect with your driver and be transferred to Jerez old town. Along the way, you will be given an introduction about the culture and geography of the city in order to set the context for your stay in the area.

10:35am: upon arrival to Jerez, you will be taken on an introductory walking tour of the old town aimed at understanding its foundation by the Hispanic-Muslim culture in the IX century and also the transformations that the city experienced (architecture, urban planning, social composition and overall character) in the 13th century after the Christian conquest and later in the 18th and 19th centuries when the local wines (sherries) became probably the most fashionable drinks in the world. Along this part of the tour you will visit the Alcazar of the city, which treasures some very interesting Hispanic-Muslim archaeology and its Cathedral, which combines many different architecture styles in its façades as well as exquisite interiors. Your tour will also take you to visit the gypsy quarter of Jerez old town in order to learn about the origins and evolution of flamenco music. Jerez is the cradle of this genuinely southern Spanish form of art and you will understand why during your tour as well as how flamenco has contributed to the integration of the gypsy community until making it one of the most respected in town.

1:05pm: after your history and architecture introduction to the city, you will be given free time for lunch. Your personal local host will point you in the right direction for you to make the most of your lunch time.
