9am: be met by your personal local host and a dedicated driver with a modern and comfortable minibus to enjoy a tour that will take you to visit Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia (the district of Porto across the Douro River) and the fishing town of Matoshinhos.

This tour is aimed at exploring the historical center and the most representative landmarks in the city of Porto: the Church of the Congregates, S. Francisco Church and the Cathedral, which is considered the oldest monument in the city (12th century).

Then you will cross the D. Luís Bridge to Villanova de Gaia to take in the atmosphere of the quarter and learn about the history of its iconic Port Wine industry. Also in Villanova de Gaia you will enjoy the gorgeous views of the city from the Serra do Pilar Monastery.

After this exploration of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, you will drive to the town of Matosinhos (just outside Porto) for lunch in a selected private home.

1pm: upon arrival to the house, you will be welcomed by the owner and his friend. Born and raised in Porto, to very traditional and well known families in Porto, Catarina and Jorge are two friends who share the same passion for entertaining, cooking and appreciating and sharing with friends the charms of Portuguese cuisine, in a relaxed, and familiar atmosphere. Catarina is a creative soul who explores her passion for Portuguese gastronomy mostly in the kitchen but also by enjoying great food out with friends. She has worked in several restaurants and gastronomic events, both in Porto and Lisbon. Jorge is a natural born host who loves to entertain at his beautiful home that he is very proud of. He is a serial (and serious) entrepreneur that a few years ago acquired this old traditional building dating from the end of the 19th century (formerly an elementary school) that he has remodeled to his own taste while still maintaining the original architectural features of the house. He has a keen eye for art and decoration so he has made the decor very original with very tasteful, eclectic and unusual decorative features. Its high ceilings and granite stonework play with a refined vintage mid-century style showcasing big and impressive pieces of contemporary art in most walls.

4:30pm: after lunch with your hosts in Matosinhos, be transferred back to your hotel in Porto.
This will make a complete full day immersion into the city of Porto and into Portuguese culture that will set the context for the rest of your trip.

3rd of October: day trip from Porto to Braga and Guimarães

9am: meet your personal local host at your accommodation and be transferred in a modern and comfortable minibus to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, just outside to the city of Braga. Along the way, your personal local host will give you an introduction about the culture, landscapes, gastronomy, nature and wines of Northernmost continental Portugal.

10am: upon arrival to the Sanctuary, you will be taken on a private guided tour aimed at learning about its historic and architectural significance. This Sanctuary and its surroundings evoke Christian Jerusalem, recreating a sacred mount crowned with a church. The sanctuary was developed over a period of more than 600 years, primarily in Baroque style, and illustrates a European tradition of creating Sacri Monti (sacred mountains), promoted by the Catholic Church at the Council of Trent in the 16th century, in reaction to the Protestant Reformation. Your personal local host will also uncover how the Bom Jesus ensemble is centered on a Via Crucis that culminates at the church. The ensemble features a series of chapels that house sculptures evoking the Passion of Christ, as well as fountains, allegorical sculptures and beautiful gardens, making it a delightful place to visit and learn about.

11am: after your visit to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesús, be transferred to Braga old town.

11:20am: upon arrival to Braga, you will be taken on a private walking tour of the old town along which you will learn about its Roman origins, when it was called Bracara Augusta, and about its evolution towards becoming the very well kept, monumental and colorful Northern Portuguese city it is today. During your tour you will visit the cathedral, which is one of the most important Romanesque temples in Portugal and also the oldest. In addition to this unique architecture style, the cathedral of Braga has some unique gothic-manueline elements. During your visit you will also learn about this style native to Portugal that you will re-encounter later during your trip.

1:15pm: end of your tour of Braga and lunch at leisure. Your personal local host will give you recommendations of places to eat in Braga. Alternatively we can pre-book a restaurant for you.

3pm: after lunch, reconnect with your driver and be transferred to the medieval town of Guimarães.

3:30pm: upon arrival to Guimarães, be taken on a private tour of its old town. Along the tour you will learn why the streets and squares of Guimarães old town are associated with the emergence of the Portuguese national identity in the 12th century. They are an exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town with a rich building typology that exemplifies the specific development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to 19th centuries through the consistent use of traditional building materials and techniques.

4:40pm: after your tour of Guimarães, reconnect with your driver and be transferred back to your accommodation in Porto.

5:30pm: arrival to your accommodation in Porto and end of services for the day.

The Sanctuary was built between 1750 and 1905, replacing an older chapel dedicated to Saint Stephen. As devotion to the Virgin Mary grew, so did the devotion to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, who became known as the patron saint of the ill and infirm.

The Sanctuary features Baroque and Rococo style elements and its impressive 686-step staircase is surrounded by the mystical Parque de Santo Estêvão, with numerous sculptures, fountains, obelisks, and impressive tile panels. From the top you will enjoy a spectacular view of Lamego.

From the sanctuary you will continue on to Lamego old town, where you will visit its Cathedral: a majestic temple that boasts a facade and interior that combine architectural styles from different eras including probably the most notable Manueline work in the region.

You will then visit the upper part of the city with the City Hall Gardens, which feature some amazing tiles.

12pm: after your discovery journey of Lamego, you will be transferred to the estate of a Portuguese countess.

12:15pm: upon arrival to the estate, you will be welcomed by the countess herself, who will first show you the grounds of her estate to later lead you into her home. She will then guide you towards her kitchen, where she will explain today’s lunch menu which will be cooked over a wood-fired stove. This will offer you some insights into the culinary traditions of the region and its culture.

Then it will be time to enjoy lunch there. The countess is the head chef in the estate and she will make sure that you have a proper homemade Portuguese lunch in her own estate.

10am: upon arrival to Coimbra old town, enjoy a private walking tour with a special focus on its old university and on how much it influenced the transmission of knowledge and particular architectural models in the Portuguese-speaking world.

Situated on a hill overlooking the city, the University of Coimbra influenced educational institutions of the former Portuguese empire over seven centuries and received and disseminated knowledge in the fields of arts, sciences, law, architecture, town planning and landscape design.

In Coimbra the city’s architecture and urban planning reflects the institutional functions of the university, creating a particular model that was reproduced in several other universities in the Portuguese world.

Along your tour you will visit some selected university buildings such as Paço das Escolas, St. Michael’s Chapel, and the Joanina Library.

Originally designed as a monument symbolizing the Christian conquest of Tomar against the Moors, the Convent of the Knights Templar of Tomar (transferred in 1344 to the Knights of the Order of Christ) came to symbolize just the opposite during the Manueline period: the opening up of Portugal to other civilizations.

1:15pm: upon arrival to Obidos, enjoy some free time at leisure to have lunch in the city and to stroll around its ancient fortified quarters, filled with countless quaint corners. We will give you recommendations of things to do and see in Óbidos and of places to eat too.

Obidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture and in recent years, it has distinguished itself through a wise combination of heritage preservation and creative innovation. The transformation of the Gothic Saint Peter Church into a library and a bookshop (that we recommend to visit) best illustrates the city’s commitment to following a sustainable urban revitalisation and development path.

9am: meet your personal local host at your accommodation and be transferred in a modern and comfortable minibus to the quarter of Belem, just outside Lisbon, to learn about the history of Portuguese discoveries and also to visit an 18th century ceramics and tiles factory where every member of the group will paint their own Portuguese tile.

9:15am: once in Belem, you will take a private tour that will take you to see (from the outside) the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and the tower of Belem.

The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos was commissioned by Portuguese King Manuel the 1st and donated to the monks of Saint Hieronymus so that they would pray for the King, and pay spiritual assistance to seafarers that left the shores of Lisbon in quest for the new world. Its very rich ornamentation derives from the exuberance typical of Portuguese Manueline art and is symbolically linked to the Age of Discoveries.

The tower of Belém, also known as the Tower of St Vincent, patron of the city of Lisbon, commemorated the expedition of Vasco da Gama and also served to defend the port of Lisbon. The cross of the Knights of Christ is repeated indefinitely on the parapets of this fortress, while the watch towers that flank it are capped with ribbed cupolas inspired by Islamic architecture.

The complex of Belém (Mosteiro plus tower) is one of the most representative examples of Portuguese power during the Age of Discoveries.
