Description and schedule of services
–
7:30am: meet your personal local guide at the port in Cadiz and be transferred in a modern and comfortable Mercedes minibus to Jerez. Along the way, your personal local guide will share some context information about the history, culture, customs, economy and overall character of the city.
8:05am: upon arrival to Jerez, enjoy a relaxed stroll through the old town aimed at learning about its Hispanic Muslim origins and about the transformations (architecture, urban planning, social composition and overall character) that it experienced first with the Christian conquest in the 13th century and later in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the local wines (sherries) became probably the most fashionable drinks in the world. During this part of the tour you will be taken to the streets where the Jewish quarter of Jerez was. There you will be explained about the Jews that lived in Jerez during the Muslim rule and about those Jewish families that came after the Christian conquest of the city.
During your tour you will also visit the local food market, which is one of the largest and most vibrant in Southern Spain. There you will learn about the produce that shapes the local gastronomy and also about the essential role it plays in the social fabric of the city.
10am: finish your introductory tour of Jerez at a selected sherry bodega to learn about the making and aging of this legendary local wine. There you will do the corresponding tastings (grape juice for the kids) and be given some basic notions about the local art of pairing food and sherry.
11:20am: after your visit to the sherry bodega, reconnect with your driver and be transferred to Cádiz.
12pm: upon arrival to Cadiz, enjoy first a panoramic tour of the perimeter of the city.
This panoramic tour is aimed at discovering its peculiar geography and also its defensive colonial architecture resembling the one in Havana, San Juan de Puerto Rico, Cartagena de Indias in Colombia and Montevideo in Uruguay.
12:30pm: after your panoramic tour, enjoy a gastronomy tour of the city that will start with some tastings at the local food market (not included). This will allow you to learn about the culture and gastronomy differences between Jerez and Cadiz. Then, you will be taken to a local tapas bar, where you will enjoy a tapas tasting lunch including a selection of 6 – 8 local dishes to share and up to 3 drinks per person (recommended and not included).
2:15pm: after lunch, start a private walking tour of the old town with a special focus on the foundation of the city by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago and on the period when the city held the monopoly of all trade with America, formerly established in Seville. You will start this tour seeing incredibly well preserved evidence of the Phoenician past of the city. This will allow you to understand who the Phoenicians were, where they came from, why they based themselves in Cadiz 3000 years ago and the impact that their arrival had in the present history, culture, gastronomy and wines of Southern Spain.
Later, you will travel forward in time to the 18th century, when the city was the heart of the Spanish economy due to holding the monopoly of all trade with the Spanish colonies. The bourgeoisie that settled down in Cádiz during this period transformed the city completely into a refined and cosmopolitan colonial hub. These new inhabitants of the city brought to Cádiz not only gold, silver, mahogany and other precious materials but also new ideas that transformed the mentality of the city and later of the whole of Spain. Along this second part of the tour you will learn the story of some Jewish merchants that based themselves in Cadiz.
4pm: end of the tour back at the port.
